Nancy Nicholson - the woman

INT. WORLD’S END (LIVING ROOM)-NIGHT

The needle rests on the end of the record.

Laura and Nancy lie entwined, caressing each other under the white curtain.

LAURA

Nancy Nicholson! Why did you keep your maiden name?

NANCY

Why should a woman become a man’s chattel because of marriage? What is marriage anyway? It’s just a civil contract, not an invitation to steal one’s identity.

LAURA

I agree! How did Robert’s family take it?

NANCY

Badly. (laughs to herself) But what Robert’s mother has never, ever forgiven me for is my insistence that my daughters take my surname Nicholson.

LAURA

Women will change the world for the better. That’s what my father said.

NANCY

Absolutely! That’s why God has to be a man, it’s the reason everything is all rot. Women do not judge each other, brutalize each other, or find anything to ridicule.  They surrender to sentimentality, mutual understanding, romanticism.
